The members that make up the congregation of Mount Vernon have unity in diversity. We are different in age, gender, ethnicity, interests, and much more. But these differences testify to the glory of the gospel for "there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28).
We believe the New Testament is clear that the the final decision-making body under God is the congregation. No organized body outside Mount Vernon's congregation governs us. And members of the church are to be baptized believers. So we believe in regenerate church membership.
This does not mean that our pastors and leaders have no real responsibility to make decisions. God has created the offices of elder/pastor and deacon to shepherd and serve the church. So they have real authority, but the final authority is the congregation.
Nor does this truth exclude us from partnering with other churches. Mount Vernon is a church in "friendly cooperation with and contributing toward the causes of the Southern Baptist Convention." We partner with other like-minded churches for the spread of the gospel here in the Atlanta area and across the world. Learn more...
